
After years of freelance engagements — many through long-term client relationships — I have noticed that project success correlates less with technical difficulty and more with how the collaboration is set up. If you are hiring a freelancer, these are the things that matter most.
Define done before you start. The single biggest source of friction is a mismatch in expectations. A one-page scope document — what is included, what explicitly is not, and what "finished" looks like — prevents most disputes before they exist.
Prefer milestones over big-bang delivery. Weekly or biweekly deliverables keep both sides honest. You see progress early enough to course-correct; the developer gets feedback before small misunderstandings compound.
Give one point of contact. Feedback funneled through three stakeholders with conflicting opinions burns budget fast. Nominate one decision-maker, even if others contribute opinions.
Ask about maintenance up front. Code has a life after launch. Agree early on who handles bug fixes, hosting, and small changes — and at what rate — so the handover is a plan rather than a surprise.
The best clients treat freelancers as partners with context, not vending machines for code. The best freelancers reciprocate with honesty about trade-offs and timelines.
